What It Treats

Chin projection and shape play a key role in overall facial definition. A well-proportioned chin creates balance, enhances jawline contour, and improves harmony between facial features. Many people feel self-conscious about their profile or have concerns about insufficient chin projection — sometimes avoiding side-profile photos entirely. Chin fillers use hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers to reshape and enhance the chin without invasive surgery.

Benefits include:

Restoring proportion in height, width, shape, and projection Improving facial harmony Minimising chin creases, marionette lines, and dimpling Reducing the appearance of jowls or a double chin Creating a slimmer, more contoured “V” or heart-shaped face Enhancing masculine, chiselled jawlines in men Results are immediate, with minimal downtime, and the treatment is fully reversible.

Is chin filler permanent?

In the UK, the authority only approves license for biodegradable dermal fillers. These fillers are being absorbed gradually over time and are therefore not permanent. The officials have banned permanent dermal fillers in the UK and rightly so because they are dangerous and may cause irreversible damage to your skin. Chin fillers are long-lasting but not permanent, Juvéderm Voluma lasts 12-18 months, whereas the latest Juvéderm Volux lasts 18-24 months.

Does chin filler hurt?

Chin filler is not painful. You will feel some minor discomfort and a feeling of pressure during the treatment. We apply topical numbing cream and the fillers we use also have extra anaesthetic medicine infused within them, to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. The doctor will be very gentle and careful. You may prefer to take some paracetamol before the procedure, however, please avoid anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or aspirin as it can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising.

How long is the recovery period for chin filler?

You will notice the result immediately. There is minimal downtime for chin filler. After the injections, you may notice mild redness and swelling on the injection sites, these will subside quickly. Bruising is rare, but if it happens can take 3 to 5 days to resolve. Concealers are useful. You can consider taking Arnica or Bromelain supplement to speed up any bruising recovery. You can go back to work and go about your usual activities immediately after the treatment, most people need not take any time off work for this procedure. It takes 2 weeks for filler to integrate with the tissues and to see the full effect of treatment.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are pharmaceutical-grade, gel-like injectables designed specifically to restore volume, provide lift, smooth out wrinkles, and fill in deep folds. They are very popular due to their effectiveness and versatile nature. We use them to rejuvenate, volumise, plump, and sculpt attractive facial contours. New ways of using dermal fillers are constantly being discovered. Depending on their ingredients, some dermal fillers have added benefits such as stimulating collagen and improving skin hydration. Dermal fillers have become a true contender to plastic surgery over the years, helping people avoid invasive and expensive cosmetic operations.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most popular and safest type of dermal fillers. They consist of stabilised, non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. The HA gel is skin-friendly and integrates well with the tissues, closely resembling the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid fillers improve skin texture by helping the skin retain hydration, and they are long-lasting yet dissolvable.

What is the perfect chin size?

Do you have the ideal chin size? How do you know your chin is small or short? When we assess chin size, we do not measure in absolute dimension, instead, we analyse by comparing your chin to another facial feature. In the publication on human anatomy, Leonardo da Vinci has famously divided the face into equal thirds, i.e. upper, middle, and lower thirds. When all 3 trisections are perfectly symmetrical, it transcribed as being ideal and perfect. The upper third measures from the midline point of the hairline (trichion) to the midpoint between eyebrows (glabella). The middle third measures from glabella to the most inferior part of the nasal septum (subnasale). Last, the lower third measures from the subnasale to the most inferior part of the chin (menton).

When the lower third is respectively shorter compared to the upper 2 thirds, it means the chin is relatively small. Chin length and contour are an important determinant for facial harmony. By restoring the chin to its optimal size, we can achieve facial balance using dermal fillers; all without the downtime, cost, and invasiveness of major operation.

Can filler help with a retracted or receding chin?

When viewing a face in the side profile, a line drawn vertically down the facial plane should ideally be touching the nasion (the lowest point of the nasal bridge), forward-most point of the lower lip and the most prominent anterior portion of the chin (pogonium). A chin that ends behind this point is considered retracted. If the chin is very retracted until the profile view displayed a noticeable concave angle, this is classified as Skeletal Class II malocclusion (i.e. retrognathia) and the chin is therefore often regarded as receding or ‘weak’.

A receding chin can affect people's confidence and self-esteem if it is very prominent. Dermal filler is particularly remarkable in correcting this type of insufficiency in frontal projection. By restoring the chin to its ideal angle, we can achieve an improved facial harmony and proportions instantly without invasive surgery.

Can chin filler make you look slimmer?

Chin filler can certainly help to give a slimmer and desirable ‘V’ look. By sharpening the chin in the mid-point, we can draw a focussed light-reflection at the centre and therefore make the face look slimmer. In a female, we often aim to align the width of the chin to the width of the nose, this often results in an attractive facial harmony. We can further enhance this ‘V’ look by having botulinum toxins in the masseter muscles to soften any squareness at the jawline too. The combined result can be very effective.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Choose hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers for facial injection because they are safer. Any other fillers are riskier; the reason is HA fillers can be easily and quickly dissolved by hyaluronidase (e.g. Hyalase). This is an important safety net should we ever need to remove it.

Pharmaceutical companies do not harvest HAs from animals or human beings; they made them synthetically in the laboratories. The products are sterile, vegan-friendly, and safe. HA fillers are not permanent, but they are very long-lasting. Your body’s natural existing hyaluronidase enzymes will slowly disintegrate the HA fillers, turn them into water and absorb the water. No residuals will remain. HA fillers are non-toxic, biodegradable, and safe. Millions of people worldwide have tried them.

Is chin filler suitable for men?

Chin filler is certainly suitable for men. For men, chin fillers may have a dramatic positive impact on their overall jawline contour, especially if their chins are respectively smaller or retracted. In a man, a prominent chin with a balanced projection and width will give them a strong masculine look. The width of the chin is therefore kept in proportion to the width of the mouth instead. Broad chin with a balanced squareness makes a great, chiselled look in a man. Strong angles and defined lines are attractive muscular features. When combined with jawline fillers, these characteristics can be further improved by optimising the bi-gonial distance in respective to bi-zygomatic distance. At Harley Street MD, we offer not only the most advanced injection technique but also impeccable aesthetic understanding of the different facial ratios in both genders.

Can chin filler help with a double chin?

When the chin is receding and weak, the lack of tissue support in this area may be associated with the appearance of a double chin. By improving the balance in chin size, volume, projection and height, the skin in the under-chin area will be able to be lifted to sit firmly at the improved chin. A toned chin can minimise the appearance of a double chin. If there are a lot of fatty tissues in the double chin, you may consider looking into medical weight loss medication to help you lower your body fat percentage.

Can chin filler help with dimpling?

Dimpling to the chin is usually caused by overactivity of the chin muscles (i.e. mentalis muscle). These are often due to a relatively small chin or tight mentalis muscle. Chin filler can help to improve chin volume and indirectly have a muscle modulation effect on the mentalis muscle. When the chin is in a more relaxed state, the dimpling will soften. If the dimpling or pebbly looking appearance is very noticeable despite chin filler, you may consider Botox® injection in this area to smooth out any uneven appearance associated with hyperactivity of mentalis muscles.

What is the best filler for the chin?

There are many fillers in the market. No fillers are designed the same, different fillers do different things. We recommend Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers for chin correction because they are dissolvable and is therefore safer. All HA fillers have different elasticity, viscosity rheological property and contain a distinct amount of hyaluronic acid. Quantity of HA will deter- mine the ‘G Prime’ of a filler, the higher the ‘G Prime’ the thicker the filler. For chin fillers, we require high ‘G prime’ fillers to maximise their lifting capacity and duration of effect in the chin.

At Harley Street MD, we prefer Juvéderm© Voluma and Volux because it has the perfect consistency and viscosity for chin enhancement. These are manufactured by the world’s leading pharmaceutical company - Allergan©. Juvéderm© for its complete tissue integration technology for natural results. Juvéderm© Volux is the longest lasting HA filler licensed for jawline and chin correction. Studies show it can last up to 24 months. We believe its quality is far superior to many other brands.

Can you have chin filler on the same day as your consultation?

Yes, you can. British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) consensus confirms that nonsurgical aesthetic procedures like dermal fillers can be offered right after the consultation. As it is a non-permanent procedure, we do not require a long cool off period as plastic surgery will.

We often allocate a 1-hour slot for new patients who never had the treatment before, so we will have sufficient time to talk you through the treatment, explain potential side effects, assess your suitability of the treatment. The consultation is complimentary with non-obligation. If you are happy to proceed, we will guide you through the consent process and you may have the treatment performed on the same day. If you are unsure and prefer a cool-off period, we are more than delighted to give you all the information you need and await your decision.

Do’s and Don’ts before chin filler:

We will recommend you avoid taking vitamin E, Omega-3 supplement, anti-inflammatory painkillers, Ginkgo Biloba for 2 days as they can increase your bruising risk. Please do not take any aspirin for at least 7 days before the treatment. If you take aspirin for a medical reason, please consult your doctor.

Avoid alcoholic beverages for 1 day and avoid exercise on the day of the procedure. These are to reduce your risk of swelling and bruising.

We recommend you have something to eat and drink before the procedure. Make sure you are not low in sugar or dehydrated before any non-surgical procedure. You can take paracetamol before treatment if you prefer, it is safe.

Please inform the doctor if you are also having other treatment on the face. If you have recently had laser or chemical peel treatment on these areas, please allow at least 2 weeks for recovery before treatment.

How is chin filler done?
  • We will put lidocaine anaesthetic cream on the treatment area for your comfort. We use an eye-liner pencil to draw markings on your chin after assessing your chin projection, size, height, and length. We take your facial angles, proportion, ratio, and symmetry into consideration when we mark the areas before the procedure. Every chin filler procedure is bespoke, and marking allows precision in our work.
  • We subsequently disinfect the treatment area with 0.5% chlorhexidine w/v in 70% alcohol antiseptic, or a non-alcoholic version of antiseptic. We only carry out dermal filler procedures in an aseptic environment.
  • We may inject using a needle or cannula for chin enhancement. Additional lidocaine is infused into the fillers, numbing the areas as we proceed and making the procedure even more comfortable. We may gently massage the area to create the smooth, natural look we aim to achieve.
  • How long does the treatment take?

The entire process takes typically 30-45 minutes, including consultation, facial symmetry analysis, application of numbing cream, preparation, and procedural treatment. We can complete the consultation and treatment within the one appointment slot. You will see improvement immediately after the treatment. It is a very rewarding procedure.

How long does chin filler last?

The results from chin fillers typically last between 12-24 months. Longevity of the fillers vary between individuals. We all have different metabolism, genetic, skin elasticity and lifestyle, though majority of people are likely to need to repeat the procedure between 12-18 months.

    What are the post-treatment instructions?

You can carry on with your day pretty much as usual immediately after the treatment. For optimal result and to avoid complication, we recommend the following:

    • Do not rub, or massage the treated area after treatment
    • Avoid strenuous exercise for 2 days as it may increase the risk of swelling and bruising
    • Avoid alcohol for 2 days
    • Avoid sleeping in prone position and avoid putting pressure on treated area.
    • Avoid applying makeup for at least 4 hours, ideally for 24 hours after treatment
    • You may take arnica or bromelain tablets which can be bought over the counter. These are natural supplements to reduce bruising. Pineapples contain high level of bromelain; ingestion helps to speed up recovery time from bruising.
    • You may take paracetamol to reduce pain as necessary
    • Avoid extreme heat exposure such as sun tanning / sunbathing / sauna for 2 weeks
    • Avoid laser treatment or chemical peel on the treated area for 2 weeks
    • It is not uncommon for the treated area to feel firm, tight, and hard for a few days. It takes 2 weeks for HA to integrate with the surrounding tissues. Once fully recovered, you will no longer have that sensation.
    • Contact the clinic if you experience any complications or side effects
    Can you dissolve chin filler?

Chin fillers are entirely reversible. Unlike plastic surgery, this is one of the many reasons non-surgical procedures are getting ever so popular. You can dissolve the hyaluronic acid fillers easily; this is the exact reason we advocate using only HA fillers for chin enhancement. Hyaluronidase (e.g. Hyalase) is an enzyme that can break down and degrade the fillers easily. Hyaluronidase may work instantly within seconds, but its dissolving effect may also continue up to 3 days. Result of the dissolving often only apparent around day 5-7 after body has absorbed all the fluid associated with the dissolving. Most of the time a single dissolving session is sufficient. That means if you ever change your mind, it is quick and simple to remove all the fillers. This is a significant safety net for many people, especially those who are having the treatment for the first time.

Request to remove all injected fillers is rare. In most scenarios, you are more likely to only require a minor tweak. We will introduce some hyaluronidase to smooth out the concerned area. If we perform the chin filler for you, we will dissolve it for you. This service is free when presented within 3 months of treatment, otherwise, a charge of £250 will apply per session.

What are the potential side effects of chin filler?

Serious side effects of chin filler are uncommon. Non-surgical procedures are not without any risks or potential complications. You may notice:

    • Discomfort or pain at the site of injection
    • Temporary swelling
    • Bruising (extensive bruising is very rare and is only temporary; can be covered by concealer)
    • Temporary numbness in your lower lips and chin because of the local anaesthetic in the filler. Normal sensation will recover within an hour
    • Allergic reaction: itching, welts, wheezing, dizziness
    • Vasovagal syncope or faintness because of injection, especially in needle-phobic individuals (please make sure you have something to eat and drink before the treatment and do not hold your breath during injection; always tell your doctor if you are needle phobic)
    • Infection (avoid putting makeup in the treated area for at least 4 hours, ideally a day; if infection occurs, we can treat it with antibiotics)
    • Granuloma formation (rare)
    • Vascular injury including skin necrosis (very rare)
    • Loss of vision (extremely rare; we take all necessary precautions to minimise your risk)
    • Greyish tinge discolouration – Tyndall effect (you may need to have the fillers dissolved)
    • Asymmetry or migration of filler (please do not sleep in a prone position and avoid putting pressure on the treated area)
Do I need to pay for a top-up?

If a top-up is needed (after swelling has subsided), additional filler is charged at £450 per syringe, since new product is required. The follow-up appointment itself remains free of charge.

Who should not get chin fillers?

Chin fillers are contraindicated in patients who:

    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Have a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid fillers
    • Have infection or severe inflammation at the injection site such as shingles or impetigo
    • Have recent skin resurfacing procedures such as laser, chemical peel, or micro-needling
    • Please allow 2 weeks recovery period before treatment

You should tell your doctor before receiving chin filler treatment if you:

    • Have multiple severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis of any kind
    • Have or have had a breathing problem, such as severe asthma
    • Have or have had bleeding problems or are taking blood-thinning medication
What if I find out I’m pregnant after treatment?

Dermal filler is not licensed in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. That does not automatically suggest it is unsafe; it means the manufacturers have not performed clinical trials in this group. It is unlikely for the licensing to change soon, as there is a minimal financial benefit for the manufacturers to run the trials, as even with approved licensing use, most women will not have the treatment during pregnancy by the statistic. If you are trying for a baby, it is, therefore, advisable to delay any cosmetic procedure.

If you find out you are pregnant after the procedure, do not worry, you do not have to dissolve them. Your body will break down the products and turn them into water. Hyaluronic acid in the fillers resembles natural HA and not reported to be dangerous to developing babies. Observational studies that follow up women who found out they were pregnant after the treatments did not discover any harm to their babies.

Can I fly after chin filler?

You may fly shortly after dermal filler injection during an emergency; there is no perceived life-threatening danger in doing so. If flying is not essential, there are certain facts you need to recognise. According to the literature on the safety of flying, it is of professional consensus to delay for 1 week after dermal filler treatment before travelling by air. Reduced atmospheric pressure on the aeroplane may worsen swelling and bruising correlated with the treatment. People are prone to water retention when flying. Notably, if it is a long-haul flight, we propose abiding by the recommendation to wait for at least one week before you travel.

At Harley Street MD, we recommend a follow up for assessment and potential further treatment. We, therefore, prefer our clients to be around for up to 2 weeks after the procedure, in case you may desire any top-up, correction or to address any complications.
