What It Treats

Therapeutic venesection (also known as phlebotomy) is a medical procedure used to treat conditions where there is too much iron or too many red blood cells in the blood.
It is frequently indicated for men undergoing testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), growth hormone therapy, or anabolic steroid cycles, as these can increase haemoglobin and haematocrit levels.
Left untreated, this can raise the risk of thickened blood, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular strain.

Conditions treated include:

  • Elevated haematocrit or haemoglobin (polycythaemia)
  • Haemochromatosis (iron overload)
  • Testosterone or steroid-induced erythrocytosis
  • Fatigue or headaches caused by high red cell concentration

By safely removing a controlled volume of blood, venesection helps restore balance and improve circulation, reducing cardiovascular strain.

At Harley Street MD, all venesection procedures are performed by GMC-registered doctors in a sterile, CQC-registered medical environment.
Our approach includes:

  • Review of your full medical and hormone history
  • Blood testing to measure haematocrit, haemoglobin, ferritin, and iron levels
  • Doctor-performed blood withdrawal (typically 350–500 ml)
  • Post-procedure blood pressure monitoring and hydration advice
  • Follow-up blood test to confirm improvement
  • Preventive management for patients on testosterone or anabolic therapy

We were among the first UK clinics to offer this service to athletes and TRT patients, providing safe regulation of blood viscosity and oxygen delivery.

More Information

What is therapeutic venesection?

Therapeutic venesection is a doctor-performed blood withdrawal procedure that reduces elevated red blood cell count or iron levels. It helps improve circulation and lower cardiovascular risk, especially for men on testosterone or anabolic therapy.

Who needs therapeutic venesection?

It is recommended for patients with high haematocrit or haemoglobin levels, haemochromatosis (iron overload), or testosterone-induced erythrocytosis. Regular venesection helps maintain safe blood viscosity and supports cardiovascular health.

Why does testosterone therapy increase red blood cell count?

Testosterone stimulates red blood cell production. In some men, this can lead to thicker blood (polycythaemia), which increases the risk of high blood pressure or clotting. Venesection keeps these levels within a safe range.

How is the procedure performed?

A small amount of blood (typically 350–500 ml) is drawn under sterile medical supervision — similar to donating blood. The procedure is quick, safe, and performed by GMC-registered doctors in a CQC-registered clinic.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort, comparable to a routine blood test. Numbing spray can be used if desired.

How long does it take?

The procedure usually takes 30–45 minutes, including preparation and post-procedure monitoring.

How will I feel afterwards?

You may feel slightly light-headed or tired for a few hours. Hydration and rest are recommended. Most patients resume normal activities the same day.

How often should I have venesection?

Frequency depends on your blood results and hormone therapy. Most patients require the procedure every 8–12 weeks to maintain healthy haematocrit levels.

Are there any side effects or risks?

Side effects are rare but can include mild fatigue, bruising, or dizziness. All patients are monitored before and after the procedure to ensure stability and safety.

Do I need blood tests before venesection?

Yes. Blood tests are essential to measure haematocrit, haemoglobin, ferritin, and iron levels. Your doctor uses these results to determine whether venesection is required and how frequently.

Is the treatment confidential?

Yes. All procedures and results are strictly confidential. No information is shared with third parties or GPs without your written consent.
