What are non-surgical cosmetic procedures?

Non-surgical aesthetic procedures have become extremely popular in recent years. These are cosmetic procedures that improve the appearance aesthetically, but do not require any surgical incision. Typical examples include botulinum toxin anti-wrinkle injection, dermal fillers, skin hydrationboosters, skin tightening injections and many more.

Unlike plastic surgery where a scalpel is used, non-surgical aesthetic procedures will usually involveinjectables with minimal downtime. Treatments are often carried out without general anaesthetics, have lower overall health risk and faster, notable results. These procedures tend to be more affordable and have become very popular thanks in part to social media and TV shows.

Can anyone perform non-surgical aesthetic procedures?

We at Harley Street MD believe that only medical professionals should perform non-surgical aesthetic procedures. If you are considering a non-surgical aesthetic procedure then you should ensurethat you are dealing with fully registered, well trained healthcare professionals. You need to be confident about their medical knowledge and skills as well as be assured that they are competent inmanaging any potential complications or adverse reactions associated with a treatment.

Botulinum toxins and hyaluronic acid fillers are medical products and should therefore only be administer by medical professionals.

Doctors are recommended as they can prescribe the medication, administer the procedure professionally, minimise risk of infections and manage potential complications. Doctors are regulated byGeneral Medical Council (GMC) and medical clinics are registered to Care Quality Commission (CQC).These are paramount to ensure your safety. When it comes to healthcare, safety always comes first.

There are non-medically trained individuals exploiting the system and placing members of the publicat risk. At Harley Street MD, we strongly advise that you not be tempted by cheap offers, and tocheck that you are dealing with medically trained professional who are registered by national regulatory bodies.

Where do you get your medical products?

Non-surgical does not mean non-medical, and it’s important to appreciate that non-surgical aesthetics products such as botulinum toxins and dermal fillers are medical products. These must be prescribed by a GMC registered doctor and dispensed by a GPhC registered phar-macy.

Every cosmetic product in our clinic is dispensed by specific named pharmacies, which have been authorised by the manufacturers as the country’s official distributor.

Every product is CE-marked with a verifiable source to ensure quality of the products. Each bottle of botulinum toxins and each box of dermal fillers are therefore insured and endorsed by the manufacturer.

For example, we only get original Botox© and Juvéderm© dermal fillers from the Allergan© official distributor; so that both you and Harley Street MD are protected by the manufacturers’ licenses in their respective medical products.

Will people know I have had work done?

Only if you decide to tell them! With a lot of our treatments, the results are subtle but effective. At Harley Street MD, we value natural looking procedures. Most people will notice that you look more youthful and more refreshed – but they are unlikely to be able to pinpoint why or how. The recovery time is short, and whilst you may experience mild swelling or redness, you should be able to go back to your daily routine immediately. For most procedures, it takes up to two weeks to see the final result. We do recommend avoiding exercise and extreme heat exposure like sauna or sunbed for at least two days to prevent swelling. It is also important to ensure to keep the area clean, minimising the risk of infection.

If this is your first time of any aesthetic procedure and you are worried about the recovery, then you can take advantage of our Friday afternoon/evening appointments. This can help you feel more re-laxed and provide a longer period to rest at home before going back to work. Most people do not need to take time off work for majority of the injectable procedures.

Is it painful?

Non-surgical aesthetic procedures are generally not painful. Most people can tolerate any mild dis-comfort that may occur.

Local anaesthetic cream will be applied to the area before injections and there is also local anaesthetic infused into the dermal fillers for extra comfort.

For areas that are more sensitive, such as the lips, we will offer to perform a dental block to numb the area completely before the procedure begins.

You may choose to take some paracetamol if you prefer, though most people do not need to. We will however advise against taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen before or after the procedure, as they will increase your risk of bruising and potentially impact the results.

How should I prepare before any non-surgical aesthetic treatment?

We will recommend that for at least two days before and after a treatment, you avoid taking products that have blood thinning properties such as Vitamin E, Omega 3 & Ginkgo Biloba supplements. This is because the blood thinning properties can increase the risk of bruising and impact the results of the treatment.

You must not take any aspirin for at least seven days before and after the treatment. If you take aspirin for medical reason, please consult your doctor.

You should avoid any alcoholic beverages within 24 hours of your treatment, and we would also recommend avoiding exercise on the day as well.

Please ensure you have had something to eat and drink before the procedure as it is important to ensure you are not low in sugar or dehydrated before any non-surgical procedure begins. We would also advise to avoid wearing make up on the day of the treatment, or alternatively to take off the makeup when arriving at the clinic. This allows a good pre-procedure assessment before the treatment begins, as helps to minimise the risk of infection during the procedure.

Can I have the procedure if I am unwell, pregnant, or breastfeeding?

If you are sick, feverish or generally run down, we do not recommend any cosmetic treatments. You should visit your doctors and ensure that your illness is being attended to professionally. If you let us know, we can rearrange the appointment for you.

Congratulations if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; however, we cannot perform any treatment during this time. This is because, currently, none of the surgical aesthetic products contain the li-cense to be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women. We would encourage you to return to the clinic for non-surgical aesthetic procedures after the labour and breastfeeding.

Do I need to pay a deposit to book an appointment?

Our clinic is very popular and to avoid non-attendance and ensure fairness to other clients, we ask for a £150 deposit when booking an appointment. Until the payment is made, your appointment is considered as booked and remains available to another patient.

Your deposit is redeemable against any treatment or service provided by the clinic.

We require 48 hours for all cancellation or rescheduling, any notice period less than this will result in forfeiting your deposit.

Appointments can only be moved to within 3 months of the original appointment, and you can re-schedule up to three times before losing your deposit.

If you are over 15 minutes late for your appointment, we reserve the right to cancel your appointment and we cannot refund your deposit.

If you have paid for a course of treatments and have not attended or cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, you have a choice of losing one treatment or paying a £150 fee.

If you have a Botox© ‘top-up’ appointment which is not attended or cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, you will have given up the complimentary treatment and will be required to pay £150 fee to re-book.

Do I need to come to the clinic earlier than the allocated appointment?

If this is your first time visiting the clinic, we'd recommend you come in 10-15 minutes before your designated appointment so that we can register you with the clinic. All new patients will be required to complete a standard registration form.

What if I am late for my appointment?

Please contact us on 02081278840 if you might be late for the appointment. We will always do our best to try to accommodate.

Please understand that if you are more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, we may only have sufficient time to conduct an assessment consultation, and any procedures will need to be re-arrange for another date.

Please note that if you miss more than half of your allotted appointment then we will have to re-schedule your appointment altogether.

Do you share your consultation note with the NHS?

Harley Street MD is a private clinic. This means that your medical notes are separate from the National Healthcare Service. Your records are not linked to the NHS, and we will only disclose or share your treatment plan with your explicit consent and instruction to do so.

With that said, we would recommend that you consider sharing information and treatment plans with your doctors though. It is beneficial for your doctors to have a full understanding of your medical history for future medical care, particularly during a medical emergency.

Can I have the procedure on the same day of consultation?

Yes, you can, for most procedures.

It is the consensus of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) that non-surgical aesthetic procedures like botulinum toxins and dermal fillers can be offered right after the consultation. This is due to such procedures being non-permanent and not requiring a cooling off period, unlike procedures such as plastic surgery.

But whilst we can offer a procedure on the same day, you are not obliged to have one. If it makes you more comfortable, we are happy to book in a procedural appointment, allowing you time to think over your options and discuss with friends or family.

You are not required to take the advantage of having the procedure done on the same day and procedures can only be undertaken when your full consent is given.

Please also note that, in some circumstances, the clinic may not be able to provide a procedure during your consultation appointment. If there is insufficient time following the medical consultation, discussion of your options and answering any of your enquiries and concerns, it will be necessary to book in a procedural appointment. This is to make sure that we are always giving you our best ser-vice and that neither the doctor nor patient feel rushed.

How long does it take to carry out the procedure?

At Harley Street MD we typically allocate an hour for the appointment slot. This will be sufficient time to conduct the consultation, allow you to give an informed consent of the procedure and to carry out the procedure, if suitable.

If multiple procedures are required, or multiple areas are to be treated, then please inform us when booking your appointment. We never want you to feel rushed and we want to ensure that we allocate appropriate time to your appointment to ensure we provide high quality care.

Can you refuse to treat me?

At Harley Street MD we do not discriminate anyone based on ethnicity, race, gender, age, sexual orientation. Our priority is to provide the best medical care to you, and patient’s safety and satisfaction is paramount; however, as part of that pledge, there are circumstances where refusal of treatment is for safety and satisfaction.

The clinic reserves the right to refuse treatment if we believe that your expectations are unable to be reached by the procedures offered, or if we believe that another procedure might be more suitable for your needs. We would instead encourage you to gain insight of other procedures in the market and their potential results, before reaching a decision on a course of action.

The clinic reserves the right to refuse treatment on patients whose expectations are not achievable by non-surgical aesthetic procedure and instead we will direct them to seek a plastic surgery assessment prior to making any decision.

The clinic reserves the right to refuse cosmetic treatment for those suffering from body dysmorphia syndrome. We advise these patients to get in contact with a psychiatrist for full mental health assessment prior to any potential cosmetic procedure.

The clinic has zero tolerance to bullying and harassment and we reserve the right to refuse any patients that are rude, abusive or intimidating to our staff or other patients.

Finally, the clinic reserves the right to refuse treatment to patients where the risk of undertaking the procedure is higher than the achievable result.

Can I have multiple procedures at the same time?

Yes, it is possible to have multiple non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the same session – however it will depend on the variety of treatments you are opting for, how long your appointment is and what recommendations have been made during your consultation.

Botulinum toxins and dermal fillers can be administered in the same session; however, we do recommend a two-week break between a chemical peel and injectables.

If you require multiple treatments or same treatments on multiple areas, it is important to inform us when making your appointment, so that we can allocate sufficient time to complete your treatment and avoid any disappointment.

Will I need to take time off work for non-surgical aesthetic procedures?

Most people do not need time off work after they receive a non-surgical aesthetic procedure. Most procedures tend to take between 30 minutes and one hour, and some patients choose to have treatment during a lunch break. Considering that the treatments are minimally invasive and pain is mini-mal, there should be no reason why you cannot return to work after the treatment, or the very next day.

Can I have the treatment if I am under 18 years old?

Unfortunately all treatments and products provided by Harley Street MD are not licensed for those under the age of 18.

Regardless of whether you have parental consent and approval, we are unable to provide any aesthetic procedures.

All patients will be asked to sign a confirmation of age prior to treatment and if it is suspected that you may be under the age of 18 you will be required to provide formal ID such as a passport or driving licence.

Are non-surgical aesthetic procedures reversible?

Most non-surgical cosmetic procedures are reversible if you change your mind. This is because a lot of non-surgical cosmetic procedures revolve around the use of hyaluronic acid, which can be dissolved.

Procedures involving Botulinum toxins are not reversible; however, they are not permanent and their effects last typically between three to four months.

What are my payment options?

Full payment is expected to be paid following the procedure.

Cash

We accept cash payments in UK pound sterling.

Debit / Credit card

We accept all major credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard and American Express. We also accept mobile payment methods such as Apple pay, Google pay, and Alipay.

Cheque

We do not accept personal cheques.

Bank Transfer

These are accepted in rare circumstances with prior discussion between the patient and clinic.

Instalments / Payment plans

We do not provide payment plans and do not accept instalment-based payment solutions. All payment is to be made in full after the procedure on the same day.

Insurance

It is unlikely that you would be able to claim your treatment from your medical insurance as policies rarely cover cosmetic procedure. Insurance policies can vary though, so we recommend you confirm with your insurance company prior to moving forward with any procedures.

Is the result guaranteed?

As per all medical procedures, a doctor cannot, and should not, guarantee any specific result. Individual results may vary, as we are all different in many ways. Please bear in mind that longevity of the outcome will also differ.

There are multitude of variables between individuals, for instance: metabolism, allergies and life-style. These all can impact the outcome and duration of the procedure in some way. All non-surgical results are subject to the individualities of the patient and the normal variability of clinical procedure results. Please rest assure that we will of course, always try our best to meet your expectation.

Non-surgical aesthetic procedures are great in many aspects; however, it cannot replace plastic surgery for obvious reason. If you are expecting results in line with that of plastic surgery, then you will likely to be disappointed. This is the very reason why a face-to-face consultation prior to the treat-ment is required. It allows us to assess your expectation, explain what can be achieved non-surgically and answer any questions you may have.

If surgery is a better option, we will certainly discuss that with you during the consultation.

I'm not happy with the results, can I have a refund after the treatment?

As per all medical procedure, individual results may vary, and we are not able to refund after procedure has been carried out. Botulinum toxins and dermal fillers cannot be retrieved back and be re-sold once injected; refund is therefore not possible.

This policy will also be outlined to you on our registration form when you visit the clinic, and it’s important that you make sure you read, understand and agree with the policy before any procedure is undertaken.

All non-surgical aesthetic procedures carry potential risks and complications which are described in detail in our consent forms. These can include, but are not limited to, bruising, swelling, pain, infection, migration of products, sub-optimal symmetry, scar, or dissatisfaction with the result.

If you have any questions regarding these potential risks and complications, please discuss them with the doctor prior to treatment. At Harley Street MD, our complication rate is very low, that is be-cause we operate on a strict protocol to minimise your risks. No medical clinics can guarantee zero complication risk. All complications will discussed prior to procedure and will only be carried out after you have agreed and signed the consent form and accepted the risk. If complications do arise, we do apologise for the inconvenience to you; however, the treatment itself is not refundable, and the clinic does not cover any expense of further treatments to manage any complications.

At Harley Street MD, we are on your side and want all our patients to be happy and satisfied with their treatments. We always do our very best to meet your expectation and help you every step of the way. If you are not satisfied with the treatment, please do not hesitate to make a complimentary follow up to find out what we can offer to help you. We will always do our best to achieve a mutually pleasant situation.

Do I need to pay if I want to dissolve the HA fillers later?

No, you do not need to pay, provided the fillers were administered by Harley Street MD, and they were administered within the last 3 months.

If a 3 month time frame has passed then you will be charged £250 for the procedure. We do not dissolve fillers administered by other clinics.

A follow up appointment is recommend following fillers as occasionally minor tweaks are required. This is completed with hyaluronidase solution and is complimentary to our patients, provided it is within the 3 month window.

Do I need to come in for a follow up?

We trust our patients’ judgement; however, we generally advise a complimentary follow up appointment two weeks after the procedure. This is an open appointment service, and the decision is yours to make. We would always recommend a follow up appointment, especially if it is your first time having the treatment.

Do I need to pay for top-up?

Botulinum Toxins

During the follow up appointment, generally two weeks after the procedure, if botulinum toxins top-up for anti-wrinkle purposes is required, they will be offered free of charge, complimentary without any cost to you. if during the follow up appointment, we concluded there are no movement noted and no botulinum toxins top up is required, we would advise you so, the follow up treatment re-mains free of charge. We do not recommend injecting more botulinum toxins where there is no indication because adding unnecessary botulinum toxins will increase your risk of developing antibodies therefore reducing the effectiveness for future botulinum toxins treatments.

Dermal Fillers

During the follow up appointment, generally two weeks after the procedure, if more dermal fillers are required the appointment is free; however the top-up is charged at £450 per syringe of dermal filler. As new fillers will be required therefore full price of the syringe will still be charged.
